Buddhism had a mainstay in Sikkim and of the numerous monasteries built in Sikkim, Phensang Monastery is one of the oldest. It was constructed in 1721 during the reign of Jigme Pawo and follows the Nyingmapa order of the Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the most visited religious places in the state. Apart from the intense religious fervor, the monastery is located amidst beautiful hills and spectacular landscape. Phensang Monastery is also home to 300 monks.
