Kargil, the headquarters of Kargil district, is around 204 Kilometers to the east of Srinagar and 234 Kilometers to the west of Leh.

It was a passage point of caravans on their way to and from China, Tibet and Kashmir till 1949, but since 1974 with the influx of tourists the region has been replaced as centre for tourism related activities.

Kargil is located on the bank of the Suru River which flows at around 10,000 ft. high. Kargil is an ideal base station for adventure activities like trekking, mountaineering, camping, river rafting etc. The apricot jam produced here serves as a rare delicacy. Kargil‘s dry apricot has now become a souvenir item, which can be purchased freely in the bazaar.
