Sikandra Akbar started building his own mausoleum and it is the final resting place of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. It is located on the Delhi-Agra Highway, few kms from the Agra Fort.
The Tomb is huge with three-storeyed red sandstone minarets beautifully carved and deers, rabbits and langurs set amidst a lush garden. Though, Akbar could not complete it and died. Akbars son Jahangir popularly known as Sikandra completed the structure of this tomb in 1613.
To build a tomb in ones lifetime was a Turkic custom which the Mughals followed religiously. The 99 names of Allah have been inscribed on the tomb.
